Best Places For Sushi

... below left, the finished plate of sushi.

It’s hard to believe that just 15 years ago sushi restaurants didn’t exist in Lancaster County. Now you can buy sushi just about anywhere, including the supermarket, though there are better options. Try one of these restaurants, which serve some of the freshest, most skillfully prepared sushi in the county.

Blue Pacific

Blue Pacific was the pioneer for sushi in Lancaster County, dating back to 2001, and for that reason maintains a loyal following. For something different, try the Tri Spicy Tuna Maki—spicy tuna wrapped in tempura flakes, sesame seed, spicy mayo and scallion in a triangle-shaped roll.

Oka Asian Fusion

Oka has the most finely appointed and spacious restaurant space on this list. It also scores big points on presentation—including a sashimi platter that was lit from below. Impressive. If you don’t mind dropping some coin, it’s a great Saturday night out. The chef’s signature rolls include the Hot Lover, containing tuna, yellowtail, salmon and avocado topped with seared tuna and salmon and served with nuta and eel sauces and spicy mayo; and the Ume No Hana, containing spicy tuna, avocado, crab meat and cilantro topped with white tuna and jalapeno and served with wasabi mayo and spicy raspberry sauce.

Sakura Asian Fusion

Sakura is the go-to place for sushi in downtown Lancaster. It’s an intimate space, which is a nice way of saying “small,” but it benefits from a liquor license and exemplary customer service. Sakura offers a nice selection of vegetarian rolls, including the Butterfly Roll, consisting of seaweed salad, tempura sweet potato, tofu skin, avocado and shiitake mushroom wrapped in soy bean paper. If you’re looking for something to complement your sushi, try the duck salad. It’s addictive.
